What is MALT for Windows
Related: What can be done with MALT
MALT for Windows consists of the followings database and related software.
(1) MALT Database
MALT Main database collects the thermodynamic properties for high temperature compounds including the aqueous species. No mixture phase is included.
(2) MALT Data Management System
This provides the main facility of handling thermodynamic data. Particularly, this makes it possible to handle several different kinds of files to be saved by user. This is necessary proceduers before the thermodynamic calculations will be made.
- Management of User Data
To compliment the MALT database, MALT assists users to handle their own user data. The user data text file (*.txt) can be prepared inside the MALT session or by users outside MALT. This is compiled into the user database(*.udb). The data stored in the MALT main database can be modified and saved in such a user data base. A typical example file (User1.txt) is supplied to show how to edit the user data text file.
- Retrieval
The MALT database as well as user database can be targeted in retrieval. According to the purpose of retrieval, the different retrieval modes can be selected. a most typical mode is to retrieve all compounds belonging to the multielemenet system such as < Fe,O,H > which is convenient for utilizations in gem or CHD.
- Calculations
Thermodymaic properties can be calculated for one selected compounds or one selected chemical ractions.
- Rearrangement of Compounds system
MALT provides gem and CHD as advanced application software. To prepare the thermodynamic data of the system to be appropreiate for such software, the rearrangement such as reorganization of mixture phases can be made.
- Data Transfer to Other Software
Rearranged data, that is, the compound system can be transfered to other systems in three ways:
MALT Direct: the thermodynamic data in the current compound system is transfered on request.
Compound File (*.mcf): This file can store the current compound system. The file can be read again to reproduce the same rearranged data. Then this can be transfered.
Compound Data File(*.mcd): The current compound system can be saved as the compound data file. This can be directly accessed from the MALT related software gem or CHD.
(3) Application software
MALT suggets users to prepare User's own application programs to make thermodynamic analyses appropriate for their purpose. MALT does not allow the user's program to make direct access to the MALT database itself. Instead, MALT provides the function of "MALT Direct," which allows to make access to the current compound system or the MALT compound data file (*.mcd). MALT also provides the advanced software to make complicated but useful analyses; namely, gem and CHD:
gm
This is the software to make complicated chemical equilibrium calculations for the multicomponent systems. By inputing the initial conditions such as temperature, pressure, and initial amounts of reactants, the equilibrium state is obtained by the Gibbs energy minimization technique.
CHD
This is to construct the chemical potential diagrams for the multicomponent systems. By selecting the fixed values of the selected intensive properties such as temperature, elemental chemical potential and also by selecting the appropriate chemical potential axes, the stability area of respective stable compounds are displyed in the two or three dimensional space. A typical example is the Pourbaix diagram for the equilibrium relations amaong the aquous species and other condensed phases.
(4) Menu Driven
All procedures are drived by menus. In general, the default setting will be applied for the typical cases so that the proper results can be obtained with a minimim number of procedures/selections. Respective dialogs or forms are initially input with default values but can be changed according to users requirements.
